About Roda de Samba Samba de Roda is just one of many different styles of samba and is the most popular and well-known musical style in Brazil, having spread and evolved into various groups and musical styles throughout the country. One of the defining characteristics of Samba de Roda is that participants gather in a circle, known as a roda. Samba de Roda, which encompasses music, dance, and poetry, is a popular festive event that originated in the state of Bahia, in the Recôncavo region, during the 17th century. Samba de Roda, which was initially an important part of the regional folk culture of Brazilians of African descent, eventually spread among immigrants to Rio de Janeiro, where it influenced the development of urban samba, which became a symbol of Brazilian national identity in the 20th century. This musical genre is a great legacy and was even designated “Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity” in 2008.
